villa hoa sua frangipani
The Villa Hoa Sua is a lovely hotel in a lovely town.
Of the three hotels I chose to rest my head in Hoi An--the Life Heritage Resort, the Ha An hotel, and the Villa Hoa Sua, the Villa Hoa Sua was by far our favorite. Personalized and friendly service, a tucked-away location and the outdoor bathrooms set this hotel apart from even if its 5 star counterparts.
This hotel is perfect for those who prefer quiet and beautiful surroundings. The rooms stood out for tasteful wood furnishing with outdoor showers and stone baths. Bong, the owner's brother/manager, warned us that I would run out of hot water if I chose to fill up the tub. In any case, the smallish pool next to the breakfast bale provided ample room for submersion. I often chose to take my Vietnamese coffee and croissant on the bale. This red-tile roofed structure is wall-less and is surrounded by a moat with goldfish.

Because the hotel lies three kilometers away from downtown Hoi An, the other guests we stayed in were also young and active. The hotel provides regularly maintenance bikes for free for its guests to pedal into town. For some of the ride one must share the road with motorbikes and vans, but the traffic is nothing like the seven lane onslaught of Saigon. I liked pedaling in and out of town every day, especially after taking in lunch, an afternoon cocktail AND dinner at Mango. review coming soon!
The rooms feature real queen beds, which are apparently a rarity in Vietnam as a lot of the other hotels we stayed at featured two beds pushed together. This was the case at the Ha An hotel, also in Hoi An. The backyard of the hotel features an outdoor shower and bathtub, in addition to a glass-enclosed shower inside. We enjoyed taking our showers outside, surrounded by greenery.
Back to the service...One of the best parts of the hotel is the excellent service provided by "Bond," the brother of the owner. He speaks good English, and his laid back and friendly attitude seemed like he has had a prior career as a concierge in 5-star hotel. He picked us up from our other hotel in Hoi An at no charge. When we left Hoi An, he arranged for a taxi to pick us up at the hotel and take us to the airport at below the marker price for foreigners. His sister also has a tailoring shop, Bong Duong, but he didn't push us to have clothes made there. It was only when we asked about the owner that he gave us their business card. We ended up visiting the shop in our own right and very happy with the clothes we had made and the friendliness of the employees. Bond also suggested a good neighborhood restaurant close to the hotel when we wanted a quick and tasty bite to eat close by.
We took our breakfasts in the open pavilion surrounded by a moat with goldfish. The hotel grounds mainly consist of the pavilion, moat, and pool, and evoke memories of Balinese hotels that I have stayed at.
The hotel is a bit out of the way from Hoi An's downtown, but we enjoyed our bike rides into the city. We were gorging ourselves at Hoi An's restaurants anyway so appreciated and look forward to the exercise. In addition, the hotel provides bikes that were nicer than the ones used at other hotels in Hoi An. The bikes have lights, so we were able to bike with ease at night when we would head into town for dinner.
Overall, 4.5 stars. Visitors to Hoi An should book a room here as soon as they know their dates. There are only five rooms and they fill up fast.
